I think Rourke put on an amazing performance in The Wrestler, but look at the role: washed up career? check. Muscle-bound gross body? check. Drug issues? check check. Yes, he was perfect in his role, but can we at least accept he was perfect for the role. It really took no stretch as an actor for Rourke to pull this off. And while I do not want to take away from his performance, Sean Penn clearly stepped outside his comfort zone (as, honestly, he has done for much of his career) and made us believe for 2 hours that he was a gay activist in San Fransisco. He created a world that was not his and played a role that couldn’t be farther from himself. In short, he acted. And he did a damn great job of it.

For the record, Katie said it first and I agreed.
He should feel lucky because he’s responsible for ruining his own career. I’m glad he was able to turn it around with his talent.
I did not think “The Wrestler” deserved the hype, so glad to see it not get a Best Picture nod.
My favorite movie of the year was “Milk.” I hope it wins and I hope Sean Penn wins best actor.
Penn really seemed to disappear into Harvey Milk, as he seems to do with most roles. The movie was so moving and emotional, especially in the context of the events of this year.
I felt the Wrestler was trite, and so obvious and deliberate. I like that it has revitalized Mickey Rourke’s career, although nobody ruined it but himself. Rourke did some great work early on, and I hope he’s now given the opporunity to do more.
