And now there are more choices out there as well. The talented folks at Tumblize are now offering beautiful looking, low cost, custom Thumblr themes. Andrew Wilkinson, founder of Tumblize, emailed me this morning and told me they are open for business now.

Very cool.

$999? What a deal!

Is this some kind of joke. $999 for a tumblr theme?! Just because you left off a digit doesn’t make it that less close to 1k. I hope you’re giving 50% of that raping price to David Karp.

I’m sorry, Tumblr Designy People, you make beautiful themes and I’m happy that you’re able to turn it into a business, but I have to agree with mascarah. You’re not helping the fact that Tumblr is getting an unfortunate reputation as a hub for whiny “creatives” whose trust funds are paying for their Williamsburg lofts. And the term “design collective” makes me want to barf.

It should be content that matters, not the way in which it’s presented. Oh, excuse me, I should have said “curated.”

It’s a problem that afflicts web design in general… business owners like pretty sites, but you can pick out the dumb ones rather quickly because the sites are far more “pretty” than “useful”. Unfortunately, this has an effect of making all of my web design clients recommend trendwhore graphics (various types of vector art madness) as the look and feel that they want for their new sites.

There is certainly a reasonable price for an individual to spend on customization services for their Tumblr, in the interest of maintaining a personal brand, but that price is far below $999. If your personal graphics scheme is THAT complex, you should probably see a shrink to talk about your NPD.

as a web designer, i’ve found that one size does not fit all. i do not obviously charge all my clients the same price. i base it on what they can spend and how much work is involved. if it doesn’t make sense for me or the client, i send them to people i think might be able to work with them.
